One can look at fine art photography in the way they look at a painting or sculpture. Photography is an art form of it’s own. It has different styles that each can be looked at as fine art. It takes the same vision as one who is creating on canvas. To be a good photographer you need to have the same creative ideas as a painter. Using your individual expression. Some look at fine art photography as only the shots a photographer takes for them self. This would not include those taken for a client. There are no guidelines or rules that define fine art photography. Fine art photography should be judges as such by the viewer and not the artist.

It can be considered a moment in time. This would be wedding photography, or portrait photography. It could be a moment that is captured by luck or without planning. This would be in outdoor photography or model photography. It’s about using your vision and fitting it into the shot as best you can. Fine art photography also is considered a form of abstract art.

For years nude photography was the only form of photography that was considered fine art. Nude photography captures a smile and expression of the human body that a painter can only try and duplicate. When painting a nude subject on canvas you are trying to compliment the look of your model. With a picture you are trying to capture the emotion and expression of your subject. This is why it can be consider abstract at times.

When a photographer is taking a picture it’s like they are sketching on a canvas. The actual painting comes when a photographer uses his tools to tone, crop, and lighten or darken the pictures. This can be taken a step further down to the paper that the picture is printed on. A photo that has been framed is just as beautiful as a framed painting. A camera can take an object or an event and transform it into an amazing piece or art. The photographer fills the role of creator and master artist with their vision.

With digital cameras producing such high quality images now. Advancements in lighting and touch up software. Fine art photography has only recently captured the eyes of the public. This is why fine art photography is considered a relatively new art form. There are many places of high education that are offering courses that weren’t in place ten years ago. Photography has taken the place of paintings and sculptures and highly coveted in the art world. There are specialized art galleries that didn’t exist just a few years ago. Traditional photography was popular until the late 90’s. This is when photojournalism started becoming the preferred form. It’s a form of photography that allows freedom to express your creativity like no other form of art.

A photographer should know every aspect of how their equipment works. Just like an artist who knows what brush to use. There are many basic steps and techniques a photographer should master before trying to sell or put their works on exhibit. Lighting is important whether you use natural or staged lighting. It can determine if your subject is washed out because of brightness or dark due to lack of light. Try to keep your surroundings simple. This will help in editing and also in reducing background noise in your pictures.

Looking at fine art photography as a fad is a misrepresentation of it’s importance in the art world. Photography itself is an art form that most people create on a daily basis and don’t even realize it. Whether it’s Facebook or any other form of social media. Photography is around us all the time in our daily lives because of technology. Fine art photography is beautiful and fascinating form of art. Enjoy it and look at it as you would a beautiful painting and you too will be capture by it’s beauty.
