When it comes to the exposure of photographs, you are basically concerned with 3 important elements – ISO, aperture and shutter speed. How do these elements impact the exposure of your photos?

The ISO is your camera’s sensors sensitivity to light. This has a direct impact on the overall finish of the photo. For instance, you may get a more grainy quality just by adjusting the ISO setting.

The second element is the aperture setting. The aperture is the size of the opening of the camera’s lens. The bigger the opening, the more light can get through. That means the photo will also tend to be brighter.

The third element is the shutter speed. The longer the shutter stays open, the more information the camera can take in. The shutter speed is usually adjusted to help take subjects in motion.

All the above three elements come together to create the exposure of the image. Using a digital camera to play with these settings is ideal because you don’t have to worry about the cost of film. You can take as many shots as you want and experiment with different settings as you go along. In addition, most digital cameras come with auto mode, semi-auto mode, and full manual mode. You can take photos in full auto mode and then switch to semi-auto to adjust the settings and see how each setting can impact the exposure of your digital photo. Once you become more comfortable with the ISO, aperture and shutter settings, you may then decide to switch to full manual mode. Note that there is no formula for getting the combination right. Even highly experienced photographs adjust the settings according to the situation.
